Men’s Thanksgiving outfit – navy quarter-zip, khaki chinos & Chelsea boots

The occasion

Thanksgiving dress codes are rarely spelled out: a family table, a game on TV, a walk after dinner, some relatives who dress up and some who don't. A quarter-zip sits right in the middle, smarter than a hoodie and more relaxed than a blazer, so you won't feel out of place at either end of the table.

How it works together

Navy and khaki have been paired for decades because the contrast is clear without being loud. Brown appears twice, in the Tommy Hilfiger Chelsea boots and the Carhartt full grain leather belt, and matching the leather at waist and feet is the detail that makes a casual outfit look intentional. Underneath, a collared shirt with the collar showing at the zip looks more formal; a plain crew-neck tee looks more relaxed.

Fit

The Dockers chinos are a slim cut, so check the fit through the thigh if you are muscular there. Slim chinos generally look best hemmed with little or no break, so they sit cleanly on top of the boots. The quarter-zip should end at or just below the belt line, so the belt still shows when you stand. Chelsea boots have no laces to adjust, which makes the fit at the heel important; try them on with the socks you will actually wear.

Alternatives

If you already own a navy crewneck sweater, it does the same job. In a warm-weather state, drop the sweater for a long-sleeve polo and swap the boots for brown loafers. If khaki feels too light, grey chinos keep the same idea. For a more formal family, a button-down and a blazer replace the quarter-zip, and the boots and belt stay.

Care

Cotton sweaters generally keep their shape best folded rather than hung. Leather boots and belts benefit from an occasional conditioner, and from drying slowly away from direct heat if they get wet.
